How The Media Causing Eating Disorders |
There has been an increased number of cases of eating disorders in teenagers mostly under 20 years old, this is getting very problematic, since severe eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia can lead to death.
As high as 20% of people with eating disorders have died. This has to stop, people and parents should stand out, be informed and advice their children of all the risk they are expose to and how they are being manipulated by the media and society.
How is that the media causes eating disorders?
Every day we are exposed to thousands of images of advertisements specially on TV. Those images influence our way of living and set our standards of how we should live. For example if you let your child watch TV for many hours a day, he is getting the TV culture of the media.
Every day we are shown the ideal Model very thin and beautiful and we see are exposed to images of thin models many times a day, if you watch a lot of tv maybe hundreds of times. This give the child a sense of what is accepted as being the best and how he or she can become that good looking.
Then the child or teenage will want to be as the models or actresses and start losing weight by not eating or eating very little. This provokes anxiety, depression, guilty for taking a few calories and obsession to lose weight even when they are thin.
Social pressure contributes to the problem, because if they are teased at the school or anywhere else by a body imperfection, they will feel frustrated and their self image will be down. So they will try to make anything to get the great looking body everyone wants to see.
You need to be aware if any symptoms of eating disorders appear in your child or teenage and seek for professional help, dont let the media to brainwash your kids. Encourage them to do creative activities.
