Shocking Eating Disorders Statistics

The most damaging eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating. Those eating disorders have very dangerous consequences if not treat it correctly, it can even lead to death.

Some statistics show that more than 8 million US people have some kind of eating disorder and of those 7 million are women and 1 million men. This show how big is the becoming the problem and a full campaign should be done to prevent this problem.

Its known that if those eating disorders are not treat is a 20% will die, however if proper treatment is done 2 to 3% have that risk. The problem is that many people with eating disorders dont accept their problem and dont want professional help.

A person with anorexia feel that she is fat, even though she is very skinny. Its a mental illness probably consequence of previous psychological problems like depression, anxiety and others.

Usually the problem begins in their puberty when the girls begin dieting and avoiding some foods to loss weight quickly and have a better physical appearance. They get obsessed with losing weight and getting fit, many times result of todays huge publicity and marketing of skinny models.

In a survey 43% of the patients said that their problem begin in the ages of 16 and 20, 33% became anorexic between ages of 11 and 16 and 10% began below 10 years old.

Although most cases are shown in women about 5% of the cases are in men and need a proper treatment also.

Most cases are developed at a young age, more than 85% of the cases are developed in ages 20 or younger. Anorexia is the most predominant disorder, however cases of bulimia are in fact more often. 1 in every 7 women in ages between 12 and 25 developed bulimia.

Eating disorders is a serious issue and needs professional attention otherwise it can seriously cause death. About 20% of the cases not treat it lead to death. Now is time for you to take action, if you know of a parent that have an eating disorder, let her know and make her understand the damage that she is making to her body.
