Although eating disorders are usually diagnose in teenagers due to psychological problems, athletes have the risk in falling in eating disorders for different reasons, sometimes they get obsessed with looking thin and sometimes they require to have a very light weight in their sport.
Its important for coaches, parents, athletes and sports administrators to be informed of this issue and monitor the healthy of their athletes. An athletes can not be healthy if he is having severe eating disorders.
There are some sports where athletes are more likely to fall in eating disorders. For example gymnastics, skating and dancing are some of the sports where specially women athletes can get eating disorders.
Some of those sports require the athletes to maintain a certain weight so they can make better their exercises and get better results in competitions sometimes the weight of an athletes can make the difference between wining and losing for a few points.
Its important to recognize when an athletes has symptoms of eating disorders and tell the coach and parents of the problem. Its important to have the support of the coach, because sometimes the athletes are in extreme pressure to give their best.
The necessity of maintain a certain weight can become an obsession for not getting any calories at all specially when they are facing a competition, that can produce eating disorders that can lead to other diseases if not treat it correctly.
